In my role as educational consultant, I was tasked with organizing the annual Family STEAM Night for a local elementary school. Leading a team of two other colleagues, we decided to try a new format and schedule for the event, and the night was a complete success!
The Posters
A series of posters I created for the annual STEAM night at my school. The theme was "Biomes of the World," to fit with our school theme of biological sciences. We had five different biomes set up, corresponding to each poster.
The Lead Up
In the three weeks leading up to the event, on the social media accounts for the school, we teased the event by releasing a different poster every few days, ending with the sixth and final poster. A week before the event we started hanging up 11 x 17 in color copies of the posters around the school.
The students all received a black and white copy of that sixth poster to take home in the their homework folders as well.
The Event
The two-hour, free event featured a free meal for students and families, and show from Mr. Bond's Science Guys, and then an hour and half to freely rotate through five different "biomes" and the scholastic book fair. Each biome was set up as a different activity or challenge, such as making an ocean in a bottle, building a waterproof shelter, building a bridge for toy elephants, and a competition to build a tool to pick up the most grains of rice at once. Students had a passport to get checked off at each biome and a full passport won them a free backpack with several books inside.
Each station also had trivia questions for students, with a correct answer earning them a raffle ticket. Raffle prizes were donations secured from local businesses that included gift cards and gourmet popcorn.
